74th ISTAF: 19 World Champions from Beijing to start in Berlin
Germany’s biggest athletics event has a varied program this year that can definitely hold its own in the international landscape of athletics meets. Students and up and coming athletes have the chance to display their skills during the opening segment starting at 1 p.m. that will see them compete in sprints and relays. All in all more than 700 students will give it their all to win the 16x50m relay for their respective school. Immediately following the relays, handicapped wheelchair users will compete in a 100m sprint. This event has developed into an integral part of the ISTAF over the past several years and underlines the commitment to promote social inclusion and accessibility.
The major competitions featuring 180 top athletes from more than 40 countries will start at 3:45 p.m. More than 50.000 enthusiastic spectators will cheer them on to see top-class performances by these superstars of track and field. Major events include long jump, pole vault, shot put, hammer throw and of course several track races.
The pole vault will undoubtedly be the ISTAF’s best event this year as the five medalists from Beijing will face off in a rematch of the World Championships: Shawnacy Barber (World Champion), Raphael Holzdeppe (Vice World Champion), Renaud Lavillenie (Bronze Winner) and Piotr Lisek and Pawel Wojciechowski, who also won bronze will face off inside the Olympiastadion Berlin.
