Applying as official stadium for the UEFA EURO 2024

The state of Berlin has announced its interest to the German Football Association (DFB) as host city for matches of the UEFA EURO 2024. The governing mayor of Berlin Michael Müller, the senator of sports Andreas Geisel and the CEO of the Olympiastadion Berlin Timo Rohwedder have formally signed an expression of interest.

The governing Mayor of Berlin, Michael Müller said: “In a sports city like Berlin, football is always welcome. We have proven to be football fanatics during the annual DFB Cup Final and after hosting the FIFA World Cups of 2006 and 2011 as well as the UEFA Champions League Final in 2015, Berlin is surely the right place for the UEFA EURO. We are always looking forward to welcoming international athletes and have great amounts of experience when it comes to the organisation of major sporting events.”

Olympiastadion Berlin CEO Timo Rohwedder emphasized the distinctiveness of the stadium: “Berlin has a world renowned five-star sports venue that has won multiple awards – the Olympiastadion Berlin. There is not another stadium operating company with the amount of experience in the organisation of major international sporting events and dealing with the sports associations of the world.”

The city of Berlin explicitly supports the DFB’s decision to have Transparency International overseeing the application process.

The DFB has planned to apply with 10 stadiums and host cities. Stadiums are required to have a minimum capacity of 30.000 seats in order to be eligible. the Olympiastadion Berlin has 74.667 seats. The DFB is required to officially declare interest in hosting the EURO 2024 by the march 3, 2017 deadline.
