Bayern beats Leipzig in the final
FC Bayern Munich is the DFB-Pokal winner for the 19th time. In the 76th DFB-Pokal final, the team coached by Niko Kovac, also the trainer of last year’s winners (Eintracht Frankfurt), beat the final debutants RB Leipzig 3:0 (1:0). In a fast-paced game, Leipzig came closer to taking the lead in the first half, until Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski scored a lovely goal making it 1:0 (29th). Two brilliant saves by Manuel Neuer kept the Bavarians in the game. In the second half, the record champion used its individual class in front of the goal and achieved its 12th perfect double thanks to Kingsley Coman (78th) and Robert Lewandowski (85th).
The DFB-Pokal is Germany’s second most important trophy in club football. The club teams have been playing for this title since 1935. The DFB-Pokal final has been played at the Olympiastadion Berlin since 1985. 64 teams (36 clubs from the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga as well as 28 teams from the lower leagues) compete in five knock-out rounds to reach the final. The DFB Cup winner qualifies for the UEFA Europa League.
