Green Globe Olympiastadion Berlin re-certified for the third time

After the initial certification in 2018 and the first re-certification in 2020, the Olympiastadion Berlin GmbH was certified for the third time in May 2022 as part of the Green Globe Standard 1.7. The renewed certification confirms the outstanding work of the operating company with regard to sustainability. Since the first certification in 2018, a large number of projects have been implemented, most prominently the conversion of the roof lighting in favor of energy-saving LED lighting. Most recently, the next promising project was tackled in January 2022 with the construction of the photovoltaic system on the stadium roof. The electricity generated by the photovoltaic system is used directly on site and supplies around 12% of the annual electricity required in the stadium.

Timo Rohwedder, CEO of the Olympiastadion Berlin GmbH, explains: “The topic of sustainability is becoming more and more important in the entire event industry. With our commitment, we want to be ahead of the game and offer all organizers in the Olympiastadion Berlin the opportunity to work in an ecologically, economically and socially sustainable manner. Our declared goal is still a climate-neutral Olympiastadion Berlin, which we can only achieve through good preparatory work. The renewed Green Globe certification confirms that we are on the right track.”

Medium-term goals for the next 1-2 years include comprehensive measures with regard to wheelchair spaces, such as doubling the number of wheelchair-accessible toilets and expanding the existing spaces for wheelchair users. Further electric charging stations are also planned in the underground car parks.
