One week until the opening match of the first FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany. On June 26, 2011, the German national team coached by Sylvia Neid will meet the Canadian national team at the Olympiastadion Berlin for the opening match. The team from up north landed at Tegel Airport in Berlin on Sunday afternoon.
The 49-person team from Canada went straight to the team’s temporary headquarters in the centre of Berlin. When they arrived at the hotel, the team and their coach Carolina Morace were officially welcomed to Berlin by the head of the local organizing committee in Berlin, Mr. Gerd Graus.
Before the team that wears the maple leaf on their jerseys arrived in Berlin, the team trained in Italy, the home country of coach Morace. The team successfully finished their training camp with a 2:0 win over fellow World Cup participant Korea DPR.
This World Cup marks the fifth time, the Canadians are participating in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The next World Cup in 2015 takes place in Canada, where they will try to win the Cup on their home soil.
